Buying your first caravan is exciting, but it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the different sizes, layouts and features available. One of the biggest mistakes first-time buyers make is assuming that bigger is always better.
In our latest YouTube video, Goldy Caravans founder Jamie shares the five questions you should ask before buying your first caravan to help you choose one that suits your lifestyle, budget and towing setup.
Who will be travelling with you?
The number of people you'll be travelling with will help determine the size and layout you need. Whether it's just you, you and your partner, or the whole family, choosing the right size from the start can make travelling much more enjoyable.
What type of trips will you take?
Think about how you'll actually use your caravan. If you're planning regular weekend getaways, a smaller, lightweight caravan may be all you need. Longer trips might call for a little more space or extra features.
What will you be towing with?
Before choosing a caravan, make sure your vehicle is suitable. It's important to consider both towing capacity and payload, as buying a caravan that's too heavy could mean upgrading your tow vehicle.
Where will you store it?
Consider where your caravan will live when you're not travelling. Storage space at home, carport height and access can all influence the size and features that are right for you.
What matters most?
Everyone travels differently. Maybe easy towing is your priority, or perhaps it's extra space, quick setup or staying within budget. Focus on the features you'll actually use rather than trying to tick every box.
Keep it simple
Jamie also talks about avoiding "analysis paralysis" - the idea that you need every available feature before you can start travelling. In reality, many caravans with extensive off-grid setups spend most of their time in powered caravan parks.
For many beginners, the best option is simply the smallest caravan that comfortably suits your needs.
